From February 28th to March 2nd, we went our first mission trip to Chengdu, Sichuan. We went with the charity Stand Tall to visit the children in Yao Ai School and to do handicrafts and art with them. It was our first time in Chengdu and to our surprise the city was very modernized.
After our arrival, the next day we travelled along with some others to Du Jiang Yan (都江堰) to visit You Ai school which is a school built especially for disabled youths. At the school, we brought art supplies and taught them how to make handicrafts. It was great fun and all the kids really enjoyed painting the boxes and piggy banks, which we brought to them!
Later on we went to visit 11 patients in their special rehabilitation machines and devices. We met Dr Kam Ho who is an occupational therapist who specializes in making prosthetics. He wanted to provide these 11 patients with new prosthetics, since they have grown out of the ones, which they currently have. After hearing about this, we decided we wanted to do something about this and start our own organization, which would allow us to raise funds to help the patients buy these prosthetics.
This mission trip truly inspired us to help others and motivated us to start Art2heart!
